What is the difference between a fire-rated cabinet
and a non-fire-rated cabinet? The
Fire-FXTM has "double tub" construction. In essence you have a
regular cabinet tub surrounded by a layer of type "X" drywall and an additional
layer of steel. The drywall layer provides the fire resistance needed to meet
the Warnock Hersey rating.
The regular cabinet tubs are not resistive to
fire.
Where do I need to use the
Fire-FXTM instead of the regular tub?
Anywhere there is a fire-rated wall where you are concerned about
compromising the integrity of the fire barrier by cutting into the
wall.
If I have a fire-rated wall but I don’t want to
purchase the Fire-FXTM what do I need to do to maintain
the fire-rating of the wall?
If you have a fire-rated wall and have
decided not to use the fire-rated cabinet, then you must line the cavity of the
cut-out with fire-rated material. This is a time consuming effort that does not
guarantee the fire-rating. The only way to be sure that you have not compromised
the integrity of the fire-wall is to use the fire-rated cabinet.
What is the fire-rating of this
cabinet?
The Fire-FXTM has
been certified by Warnock Hersey, and carries the 1-hour rating for combustible
walls and 2-hour rating for non-combustible walls.
Cabinets are fabricated in accordance with UBC 43-6
(ASTM E814-88) to measure fire resistive performance.
Can I get any cabinet, any size with the
Fire-FXTM tub?
The
Fire-FXTM is not available on trimless (with the exception of the
Embassy model) and surface mounted cabinets. The size of the fire-rated cabinet
tub cannot exceed 840 square inches (28" x 30"). the cabinet also cannot exceed
28" wide. For example you may order a cabinet that is 16" W x 40" H but you
cannot order a cabinet that is 40" W x 16" H. this is because of the way that
fire spreads. The wider the gap in the wall the faster the fire can
spread.
Do I use the same size cut-outs that I would for a
regular tub cabinet?
No, the cut-outs for the fire
rated tub are larger because of the double tub construction. Consult the detail
and submittal sheet for exact dimensions.
Does it matter what kind of door or handle that I
choose?
No, you may use any door style or handle that JL. provides
and still maintain the fire-rating.
Can I purchase the
Fire-FXTM cabinet and modify it in the
field?
No, any field modifications (except the valve cut out as
noted below) to the cabinet will void the fire rating.
Can I get cabinets with valve cut-outs that are
fire-rated?
J.L. can provide you with the
valve cabinet but the cut-outs must be done in the field. We will provide you
with Warnock-Hersey approved instructions that must be followed exactly to
maintain the fire rating.
